About the Role​

The mission of the Forward Deployed Engineering team is to help Medplum's customers get the most value out of the platform, and to do it resourcefully, creatively, and with a real sense of ownership.

As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will work directly with healthcare organizations ranging from startups to large enterprises. One day you might be debugging a complex FHIR integration, the next leading an architecture workshop, and the next building a production workflow or AI-powered healthcare application.

Success in this role requires strong engineering fundamentals, excellent communication skills, and a genuine interest in helping customers solve difficult problems. The best FDEs are equally comfortable writing TypeScript code, troubleshooting production systems, leading technical discussions, and advising customer stakeholders on long-term platform strategy.

What You Will Do​

Help Customers Build and Launch Healthcare Applications​

Work directly with customer engineering teams to accelerate implementation timelines and reduce time to value. Lead technical workshops, troubleshoot complex integrations, review architectures, and provide hands-on guidance throughout the deployment lifecycle.

Design Technical Solutions and Serve as a Trusted Advisor​

Partner with technical, business, and clinical stakeholders to understand their goals and help them build scalable healthcare systems on Medplum. Guide architectural decisions, identify risks early, and help customers navigate complex interoperability and operational challenges.

Build Production Software​

This is an engineering role. Forward Deployed Engineers write production-quality code that ships to customers.

You will build integrations, workflows, data migrations, automations, reference implementations, and healthcare solutions using the Medplum platform. You'll frequently work across APIs, cloud infrastructure, third-party healthcare systems, and customer environments.

Help Customers Build AI-Powered Healthcare Workflows​

Work with customers to design and deploy AI-enabled healthcare applications, including clinical copilots, intelligent automation, ambient documentation workflows, and agentic systems built on healthcare data. Help customers understand emerging AI capabilities and translate them into practical solutions that improve patient and provider experiences.

Expand Customer Success​

Identify opportunities to help customers solve additional problems using Medplum. By understanding customer goals and educating teams on the capabilities of the platform, you'll help customers unlock new use cases and maximize the value of their investment.

Shape the Product​

Forward Deployed Engineers have some of the closest contact with customers and play a critical role in informing the product roadmap. You will bring customer feedback directly into product and engineering discussions, helping identify new features, integrations, and platform improvements.

Help Build the Forward Deployed Engineering Practice​

Contribute to the tools, processes, documentation, and best practices that enable the FDE team to scale. Help define what great customer delivery looks like and continuously improve how Medplum serves its customers.

About You​

  • You are a strong software engineer who enjoys working directly with customers.
  • You have excellent communication skills and can explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • You have full-stack TypeScript experience and can build integrations, automations, and production workflows.
  • You are self-directed and take ownership of customer outcomes.
  • You enjoy solving ambiguous problems and are comfortable operating in a fast-moving startup environment.
  • You are able to build trust with engineers, technical leaders, and executive stakeholders.
  • You are curious about emerging technologies, including AI, and excited to help customers apply them to real-world healthcare problems.
  • You have 3+ years of experience in software engineering, solutions engineering, technical consulting, developer relations, customer-facing engineering, or related technical roles.
  • You're based in the SF Bay Area and available for twice-weekly in-person collaboration.

Bonus​

  • Experience building developer platforms, APIs, or infrastructure products.
  • Healthcare or health-tech experience.
  • Experience working directly with enterprise customers.
  • Experience building AI-powered applications or workflows.

The San Francisco, CA base salary range for this role is $125,000-$200,000 per year. Actual base salary within this range will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, and qualifications.
